In this HCI Podcast episode, Dr. Jonathan H. Westover talks with Kimberly Wiefling about the biggest obstacles to success in today's organizations. See the video here: https://youtu.be/8AzyIt1CiX0.
Kimberly Wiefling (https://www.linkedin.com/in/scrappykimberlywiefling/) is known for her authentically scrappy style. At Hewlett Packard she felt like a hired assassin where she prioritized projects over people. After 10 years working in technology, she realised that technology fails far less frequently than people do. She uses her experience as a scientist and technologist to navigate and transform the messy world of organisational culture. Her superpower is helping companies achieve what seems impossible by converting common sense into common practice and bringing people with diverse backgrounds together to achieve what couldn't be done alone. Kimberly has worked with over a hundred major corporations including Yamaha Motors, Suntory, Mitsubishi, NASA, and Indeed.

In this HCI Podcast episode, Dr. Jonathan H. Westover talks with Dr. Erin Eatough about the new BetterUp report, "The Connection Crisis: Why Community Matters in the New World of Work." See the video here: https://youtu.be/exj-2iJV9Co.
Dr. Erin Eatough is researcher, author, speaker, and consultant and serves BetterUp as Manager, Behavioral Science. She is the researcher and author behind BetterUp’s Research & Insights blog column and speaks regularly about the science behind human thriving at both academic and industry events. Erin received her PhD in Industrial-Organizational Psychology from the University of South Florida. Before BetterUp, Erin was a professor. With over 30 articles and book contributions, she actively publishes research on the intersection of work and well-being which has been featured in outlets such as the Journal of Applied Psychology and Journal of Organizational Behavior, and cited in media outlets such as Harvard Business Review. Erin is the recipient of several awards for her scientific works including authoring the top research paper of the year by the National Communication Association and Outstanding Author Contribution by Emerald Publishing.
The report reveals that 43% of employees say their organization isn’t doing enough to help them feel connected to their colleagues. Furthermore, while people today overwhelmingly want to have more friends or friendly colleagues in the workplace (with 53% indicating they’d be willing to trade compensation for stronger ties with colleagues), almost none of us are finding the connection we want.
BetterUp’s most recent research shows alarming trends taking hold across the workforce:
61% don’t socialize with their co-workers outside of work
53% don’t look forward to working because of co-workers
44% don’t have a true friend at work
43% don’t feel a sense of connection to co-workers
38% don’t trust their co-workers
22% don’t have even one friend at work
Workplace connection matters more than ever. The problem isn’t just that people have become isolated, but that companies need stronger connections with and among their people to have the committed, adaptable, resilient, and mentally fit talent they need. Ultimately, connection fuels performance and well-being.

S38E2 - Building a Successful, Self-Sustaining Company, with Michael J. McFall
Thursday Jul 14, 2022
Thursday Jul 14, 2022
In this HCI Podcast episode, Dr. Jonathan H. Westover talks with Michael J. McFall about building a successful, self-sustaining company. See the video here: https://youtu.be/bb4DwkfpQ0I.
Michael J. McFall (https://www.linkedin.com/in/mike-biggby) is Co-Founder and Co-CEO at BIGGBY COFFEE, the US' third largest coffee franchise. Mike is the Everyman CEO--he doesn't have a yacht, a podcast or an MBA, and you won't hear him talking about being disruption, leveraging assets or changing paradigms. He is, however, the founder of Global Orange Development and the co-CEO of BIGGBY COFFEE®, a fast-growing $200-million-dollar coffee franchise with 300+ locations across the Midwest. At a time when there's a lot of confident-sounding start-up advice from academics or ultra-wealthy tycoons, Mike's remarkable life journey from minimum-wage barista to business leader has given him a very different outlook. His perspective on business—shaped by spending the last 23 years helping hundreds of people open and operate successful coffee shops—provides a much-needed road map for today's entrepreneurs so they can turn their ideas into a profitable reality. If Mike's business philosophy can be distilled down to its essence, it would be this: Be brave. Be humble. Be thoughtful. Be aware of others. And be yourself.
